I was expecting a good deal more experimentation, or perhaps something a bit more eclectic, but I was not disappointed in the least. The classically-trained cellist comes out in full force as she weaves lush soundscapes, creating a perfect setting for any activity we like to do with the lights dimmed. Natoma is Zoe Keating's breakthrough masterpiece. I bought this CD because Ms. Keating is a member of one of my favorites, Rasputina. This particular album is absolutely astonishing in its luster and originality.
Keating's work is polished and deliberate, as illustrated by songs like the soothing and graceful second track, Fern. Other tracks exhibit a more primal, somber style. Of these songs, We Insist is perhaps the most compelling.
Natoma establishes Ms. Keating as a truly great composer and gifted cellist. This is definitely some of the most intriguing new music I've bought in a long time.
