Generally be calm, I know its not allowed to drive and practice in that area, but I think its a good idea to have a walk in the driving place and see around. I did waaaayyyy better than I did my first test and I still failed. Next week, I'm going back to anoka. Anoka dmv takes you out to city streets and they are more than happy to look pass minor flaws. I think it's a lot easier if you're out on city streets because there are cars and people and you are more alert about what to do. If you go to places where they have their own tracks, it can be hard. You are not as alert because it's so quite and empty.

I was here to change my out-of-state license to MN license and was impressed by how quickly the entire process was. When I first arrived, I did not see the signage for the written test so I accidentally waited in the wrong line. A more visible signage would have avoided the confusion. Even so, I was able to leave within an hour! There was quite a line for the written test, but it moved pretty quickly.

The bottleneck of the process was definitely the initial check-in or at any point where a staff interaction was required since there were only three staff members working at the written test area. There were 20 testing stations available and only half of them were being used at all times. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I did not know whether or not I should get the enhanced license and the lady patiently explained my options.

If you are wondering how I can possibly give this place 4 stars, keep reading. I'm originally from CA, have also lived in HI for a bit, and had to go through the CA and HI DMV locations plenty of times for driver and vehicle registration issues back in my younger days. Even though those visits were many years ago, they were comparable in suck factor for sure. MN DMV services make those other states look like 3rd world countries in the midst of a war. Now I will admit that employees that work in DMVs everywhere seem to have a lot of similar traits that are not always positive. I think that in every state they are hired based on a prominent Eeyore factor and must score very low on motivation and executive processing speed in order to receive a job offer. However, that is where the similarities between all DMVs stop and where MN is much better.

When there are lines at this location, at least they are organized and reasonable from a wait time standpoint. I know that there are some comments here on having to wait for an hour (my wait time on 3 separate occasions at this location have all been under 20 minutes) or more but that pales in comparison to the 5-6 hour waits at many CA DMV locations.

I certainly appreciate that this location makes it relatively easy for me to accomplish auto owner and operator privileges in MN, especially if you have any perspective on how these services are totally dysfunctional in other states. What a magical DMV! As a newbie from California, I needed to take the written test to get my driver's license. I went on a Wednesday morning at 8:30am and walked up with no line at all. Signage could be a bit better (if you just need a written test, go immediately to the room on the right when you walk in, not to the main counter), and I wish it was open on the weekend, but hey, it's the government.

It was speedy (in and out in under 30 minutes), the people were SO friendly, and the exam was super easy. Highly recommend. Excellent experience! Came on a Thursday around 11:30am in the winter month.

Parking: follow the signs for public parking if your going in for services. The place is an obstacle for new drivers taking the road test, so there seems to be designated spots for them too! Everyone there worked efficiently thru the entire process. Knowledge / written exam: great!

If that's all you need, go directly into the room. No need to wait if the long line outside. There is a smaller line within the door but it goes quickly because there are like 15 testing stations. If you read the manual the test will be easy! You take it on a computer so you know instantly if you get them right or wrong and you can track your status of passing.

You see a picture with the questions on the screen but there are also headphones to listen to the questions being read. Once you pass you wait in line and they can process your form right there if you have all the documents/ fees. The young woman Ana helping me was suuuuper helpful! If you want to apply later, they can give you a yellow receipt that says you passed and will apply for your license later. If you don't pass, they'll let you know when you can take it again.

Building: it's a smaller dmv. There's a waiting area with chairs. They have a separate room for those just taking the knowledge exam.

And another area where most of the line was to help people with renewals. I don't think they process tabs/plates. There was a young lady worker in the line helping people with forms and directing them where to go. Super helpful!

When I saw the requirements I was a bit overwhelmed and had to sit and figure it all out. Once I thought I had it mostly figured out one of the agents came over and offered to look it over for me and Wala! I was very happy as I had already taken my written tests and taken time off work and wasn't too thrilled about having to take time off again but luckily the friendly staff helped me straighten it all out.

All in all, I had a great experience.
