Hi, my problem is so strange because is a problem that I've encountered in the last week. I format my pc and then I reinstall Windows 7 Beta. Well, every time I've done, Win7 automatically recognised my video driver and download the driver in the first Windows Update after I connect on my wireless. Now, it doesn't done this, and it have only 'Standard VGA Graphic Adapter'. The strangeness is that I can always install the correct driver on my pc and now I can't. It seems that the Microsoft have to inhibit this driver.

FYI, you cannot download the Mobility Radeon drivers from ATI. You have to download the desktop Radeon drivers from ATI and mod them to work with the Mobility Radeon GPU's in a laptop. However I prefer the DNA drivers, it just patched and works well. Too bad I overwrote the disk I originally used for Win7 to upgrade through Windows Update, I could have probably found the driver on the disk and zipped it up for you. I have the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, so I have no interest in installing the driver for the X1400. Note that when I installed the modded Full Driver Suite from ATI, I had turned UAC off until I was done and had rebooted. I had UAC turned off when I modded the ATI driver as per the instructions from Mobility Modder. I never had to use Compatibilty Mode, and I received no errors.
I have the correct driver installed for my GPU, and my Experience Index is 2.0 for Graphics (I have a earlier version GPU than you do). The Experience Index in Windows 7 and Vista are the same for me.
Yes, I have been trying the modded installer. Setup keeps attempting to install the drivers from 9.3 suite, as it successfully does in Vista without even modding the driver but the driver installation has been continuously failing. Every other component installs. The MS supplied drivers seem to work so far and since the driver installation fails x1400 has not shown, nor any other AMD supplied driver using that method. At least so far, but I am still experimenting. I suspected that the driver supports x1400 from the beginning since it insalls and works flawlessly in Vista.

Hi, all you have written is good, but the bad thing is that we don't have yet native driver for our OS. I think people on this forum know how to mod driver, or can retrieve information for do this, but the 'normal' people don't know, and when you install an OS and connect to internet it download your display adapter driver, is different than it doesn't. All you have said about device manager ->display adapters ->etc. Is only a forcing of the normal installation for a driver (last time I must do this is for a modem 56k of Motorola on my Windows 98).

If I/we want to modding it, we must have the security of having original and certified driver to return if we have problem. After 'only' three years, it's impossible that we not have native driver for a new OS, when company ask for retrocompatibility on microsoft OS of their apps 15 years old. It's a paradox. Mobility radeon are not officially supported by ati on vista, and on xp there is a link from official site where you can download it, but everytime I used driver downloaded from ati, it never recognised my x1400 mobility. I installed 9.3 on Vista, It is also their first driver version and the same file that supports Windows 7.
That is why I was so sure that it would work. Since then they have announced that all DX9 cards will now be supported as legacy drivers, ie; they will rarely update drivers for our card. Their current version is 9.4, but it is not supposed to support our x1400. I realise that they don't officially support x1400 as they leave that up to the laptop manufacturers but for some reason last month the driver verion worked for me. I was sure they did this to support Win7, but apparently not so, It won't install even though David Batson points out in an earlier post that if the driver were to install it supposedly does support our card in Win7 as well.
Frustrating if the driver supports the card but won't install. Just to be clear. I downloaded the Full 32-bit Catalyst 3 driver from ATI, version 9.3.0.0 on 04/16/09, filename: 9-3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe. I downloaded Mobility Modder on the same day.
I followed the instructions on Mobility Modders website. 1. I turned off UAC and rebooted. I ran 9-3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe, but exited out as soon as the files were expanded to the hard drive.
I copied Mobility Modder to C: ATI Support 9_3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu and unzipped it. Polldaddy Hack Script Admin. I installed Mobility Modder, and at the end of the installation I let it run and mod the ATI driver. I ran C: ATI Support 9_3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu Setup.exe 6. I turned UAC back on, then rebooted again.
Everything worked, no errors reported at any time. Shame on AMD support, hardware that was sold as little as 30 months ago gets absolutly zero support in the new OS? I would not expect continued support, just basic to get it operating at a reasonable level, and I suspect that since they are promising quarterly support for Vista and Vista driver model is so close that they could easily keep the driver compatible for both.
I doubt that they will even be using different drivers for Vista and Seven for the supported devices. Is it a cost factor?
Microsoft charges for Windows Update delivery right? Perhaps It is they that we should be shaming, after all, if they are introducing a new OS shouldn't they like at least give AMD at least one driver version they could put on Windows Update for free to give customers the best possible experience? After all I wouldn't consider purchasing the OS for my laptop, I can't install drivers or update the hardware to something compatable if it were not for the likes of members on other forums or being a little techy? I would think that their sales department(MS) should then be the ones responsible! Who or where do we contact them? Can anyone provide suggestions so we can email the proper department at MS? Microsoft strives to give more retrocompatibility possible and the company ignore their customers, then Microsoft loses, unjustly, credibility for their guilty. If I was Microsoft, I make a completly new OS, only in 64 bit and with a revolutionary kernel (I don't know if Midori is really like this.), and if the company want to sell their hardware and their software, they must write driver and apps in the right way and they have to write from 0 code. If the companies which have obsolete but working OS and apps want to remain with Windows XP, they can. But it's not rightful that Microsoft lose points to customers and other OS companies gain that for not Microsoft faults. Sorry for this vent but I'm tired to listen other OS customers attack Microsoft. If Microsoft want, Microsoft can.

They now state in their forum that they have no intention of supporting their 'legacy' hardware (if you consider 30 months old) on Windows 7. If the driver model is so close I can't imagine any reason other than delivery costs as I stated in my previous post. You see I believe they are already developing drivers for Vista that are compatable with Win7, So are they thinking that I will buy a new laptop with a new ATI(AMD) card for Win7 as opposed to another manufacturers card? Maybe, or are they just refusing to pay microsoft's delivery fee?
Yes it is Microsoft's or AMD's business plan that is responsible for this, I am not sure who's, but I personally think one of the two (or both) is just being spoiled, refusing us drivers that are there anyways, I am both a Microsoft and AMD consumer and yes I can as a consumer, look to alternatives such as keeping an older OS, changing to another OS, or purchasing different hardware. I just am trying to figure out which is to blame. MS or AMD so I can vent towards the proper corporation. I don't believe that the hardware is so outdated that it won't work with Win 7, I get a 4.0 experience index for graphics with my outdated hardware, is that reason to through it in a landfill? PS, I agree that Microsoft has the right and infact should force signed drivers, or perhaps make it more clear to the end user that that is responsible for their OS problems. PPS, I do not believe they(AMD) are planning to support any of the hardware you mentioned in Win7, my x1400 is included but not listed on that list. Most of that hardware is very capable on Win7, and none of those products will have any kind of AMD support for Win7.
Many of those have drivers on the beta install disk, but those that don't, won't ever get one from AMD, at least that is their position so far. Not sure if this is the reason for the modded driver failure of the X1400 or not. I just realized that the X1400 is not listed under the desktop Radeon series, only under the Mobility Radeon series. All of the other numbers that are in the Mobility Radeon series are also listed in the desktop Radeon series (when looking at the Vista 32-bit drivers).
Since it appears the X1400 is unique to the Mobility series, perhaps the specific driver for it is not included in the desktop Radeon Catalyst 3 download. So when modding that download, it might not leave a driver for the X1400.

I found a driver on windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ catalog, by searching for 'ati x1400 windows 7' Just installed the 64bit version on a Win7RC on a Lenovo T60 - worked like a charm. The driver are available on this site and not using Windows Update in the OS. And, anyone can test if in the RC the drivers is on Windows Update? I know, I have been trying to get this point accross for days now, any hardware that has ever had updates posted on windows update is posted there. ANYONE that has hardware driver issues I recommend getting your 'Device ID' or 'Hardware ID' and searching there with harware model or that 'Device ID'. I have been amazed, It lets you know every OS that the driver is compatable with, The only downfall I have seen so far is it doesn't differentiate between 32bit and 64bit Win7 yet.
I highly recommend that if the device driver isn't found by model number or the complete 'Hardware ID' that you try truncating the hardware ID where the &SUBSYS part starts. I have found that a great deal of hardware is the same, just rebranded and often one manufacturer will upgrade the driver but another won't! I have found many drivers using this method and many more!
Here is my experience that might help some lost souls out there who hit on this forum because they are searching for legacy x86/32bit ATI drivers for Windows 7. I decided to install Windows 7 RC on some legacy hardware. One a Pentium 4 2.4 using an ABit SR7-8X board with 512MB and an ATI Radeon 8500 graphics card. The other based on an Athlon XP 1600+ on an ASUS A7A266 board with 1.25GB using an ATI Radeon 9250. As most found out, the Windows 7 install, if via a Vista upgrade or a fresh install will simply ignore the Radeon and install a standard VGA driver that is very slow and limited to 1280*1024 max resolution.
I then decided to install the latest XP ATI Catalyst drivers from AMD (6.11). Though the Catalyst is not supported, the driver install worked without a hitch. I could now set my resolution to 1920*1200 and everything looked fine.
The next problem arose when I tried to shut down or reboot. Every single time ATI2dvag crashed just about at the end of the shutdown process with a BSOD. Twice it resulted in a corrupted registry, once unrecoverable necessitating a reinstall. Back to search for a better solution. I then installed Vista and discovered that Microsoft installed a newer XDDM driver (6.14) as part of the XP upgrade.
In Vista, this driver didn't crash the system under any circumstances I tried. As I couldn't find this driver on the net anywhere, I decided to extract it. It is posted here: Download it and you can now install this driver via the device manager/browse my computer for driver software/let me pick from a list. You might need to turn off 'show compatible hardware' and then look for the extracted '.inf' file in the display directory. Once installed, everything works fine for me on both machines. I get a 1.9 score for both cards on the Aero performance scale but a 1.0 for gaming graphics. My guess is that it doesn't even test the gaming score as it reports in the detailed performance information no dedicated graphics memory despite the fact that both of these cards have it.
I didn't test any games but ran DVD quality videos from the hard disk using Kmplayer and Media Player. Though Kmplayer clearly performed better, both of them did a good job. A few artifacts were visible in fast moving scenes but otherwise it was very watchable in 1920 * 1200 full screen mode. This exercise demonstrates that Windows 7 works very nicely and MUCH better than Vista with legacy hardware, in fact with very old hardware.
It also points out that systems with onboard chips or graphics cards based on the 7 series, 8 series or 9 series ATI Radeons are not a lost cause for Windows 7.
