Vw Bus Headliner Installation Instructions 4,9/5 4509reviews

I'm looking for any sound advice or tips for installing a TMI headliner in my '74 Coupe. I just finished doing the TMI upholstery (relatively simple), but am feeling a little anxious about tackling the headliner.

The car just came from the paint shop and has all windows and glass removed. I have the original bows, and plan to use some 3M adhesive for the process of holding it in place until I can get the glass reinstalled.

I'm assuming I should start with the pillars first to make all the edges look right. I've also heard that I should take a couple of days to let the progress of each day dry before 'pulling' against it to rid the headliner of wrinkles. Any other suggestions from those who may have done this before???

West Coast Metric sells a video that documents replacing a complete Bug interior, including thorough documentation of the headliner. I bought the video and watched it. I have done a headliner before (a Studebaker Lark, my first restoration), and I found the WCM video to be very helpful (I bought it for seat cover installation tips). Wish I had seen it before doing my Lark! I think it cost $25.a small price for stress reduction and installation tips. IMHO, the principles of installing headliners are pretty much the same. My recommendations are: plan your attack, pull.pulll.pull, cut and trim very conservatively (like carpentry, measure twice and cut once)'cause you can just cut or trim a bit more 'til right, and have lots of patience.

Figure the worst case: you screw it up, and you buy another headliner and start over. I would do something different next time over the door openings: Be sure to wrap the headliner over both sides of the metal flange that the weatherstripping slides over. I glued my headliner only to the inside of the flange then cut it along the ridge of the flange. It made it easy to cut, but made it really difficult to wedge the weatherstrip on without scrunching up the headliner on the inside of the flange! I used a plastic tool (I think it was a orange peeler) to gently persuade the headliner back flat against the flange under the weatherstrip.

And fold about 1/4 inch of the bottom of the front pillar pieces under and glue it so the cut edge is concealed.
